History and evolution of the vineyard

Neighbor of Apremont, the vineyard of Abymes in its current form results from the collapse of the Mont Granier. Indeed, the wine is produced on its scree. This region did not exist seven and a half centuries ago, only the small town of Saint André remained, surrounded by about fifteen small hamlets. Following the landslide, the landscape was strewn with rocks, holes and ponds and was then named "Les Abymes" by the inhabitants. This area remained bare and barren for several decades before being overgrown with brush. Then peasants began to cultivate vines. Towards the end of the 18th century, the inhabitants of Chambéry, craftsmen and shopkeepers decided to produce their own white wine, a great fashion of the time, combining work in the vineyard with family life in the famous "sartos" and religious worship with the proximity of Notre-Dame-de-Myans. At the time of the phylloxera crisis, as for the Apremont vineyard, they sold their vines to seasonal migrants: the Entremondans and to mountain dwellers from the neighboring Massifs, but they soon became disillusioned and abandoned the vines. But thanks to passionate people, the Abymes vineyard has regained its former notoriety, and today it represents the 2nd Geographical Denomination of the Vineyard in terms of surface area and volume. The AOC was created in 1973.

Terroirs

Following the landslide of the Mont Granier, the limestone rocks covered a ground made of old glacial moraines and marls, up to the doors of the villages: Les Marches ("Murs" at that time) and Myans which stopped it dead in its tracks which led to many stories (the Black Virgin of Myans). The vineyard is therefore installed on slightly sloping hillsides, with an east to east/south-east exposure. The vine has found, thanks to a predominantly calcareous/stony soil and exceptional sunshine, its preferred terroir.
