History and evolution of the vineyard

The AOC Savoy geographical denomination Apremont dates from 1973, it is one of the most famous white wines of Savoy. Its history is linked to the landslide of Mount Granier in 1248. Indeed, with a height of 1933 meters, the Granier wall dominates today the Chambéry cluse but it is a still living scar of the landslide that occurred more than 750 years ago. This mountain also explains the etymology of the name of the village Apremont " Asper montis the rocky and rough mountain ". The vineyard of Apremont and the one of Les Abymes, its neighbor, developed simultaneously, because seven and a half centuries ago, this wine-growing area was quite different, only the small town of Saint André remained, surrounded by about fifteen small hamlets. After the landslide of the Granier, this area remained bare and barren for several decades before being invaded by scrub. Then farmers began to cultivate vines. Towards the end of the 18th century, the people of Chambéry, artisans and shopkeepers decided to produce their white wine, combining work on the vine with family life in the famous "sartos" religious cult with the proximity of Notre-Dame-de-Myans. In 1860, at the time of the phylloxera crisis, they sold their vineyards to seasonal migrants, the Entremondans, and to mountain dwellers from the neighboring Massifs, who also abandoned the vines. Today, thanks to passionate people, Apremont has regained its letters of nobility and seduces an ever increasing number of people.

Terroirs

Following the collapse of Mont Granier, the limestone rocks have covered a soil made up of old glacial moraine and marl. Unlike Abymes, the Apremont vineyard is situated on hillsides with steeper slopes, and many plots face south and east.
