This geographical name is linked to the history of the Altesse grape variety. Indeed, Marestel owes its name to Claude Mareste who imported from the island of Cyprus, the first plants of the Altesse grape variety, noticed by the quality of the product obtained. Back from the Crusades, he offered them to Anne de Lusignan (as a wedding present), daughter of the King of Cyprus, who became Duchess of Savoy. Advisor and butler to the Duke of Savoy Emmanuel-Philibert, the latter made him baron of Lucey in 1563. Finally, in memory of the Crusader, the Duchess named this wine "Marestel". The domain and the castle of Lucey were sold in 1816 to a property trader, who the following year sold them to the Count of Boigne whose family still owns this vineyard. The AOC Roussette de Savoy (Marestel) was created in 1973.
At the foot of the Montagne du Chat, the vineyard is located on the high and sloping parts of the hillside (slopes from 30 to 70%), facing south west, on clay-limestone soils and on Jurassic limestone scree. It benefits from the temperate climate of the Lac du Bourget: warm summers and mild winters.
