History and evolution of the vineyard

This geographical denomination of Savoy wines is located on the shores of Lake Geneva. Following a reduction of half between 1872 and 1972, the vineyard is now stabilized and represents 14 hectares.this vineyard keeps a unique way of conducting the vine: the "crosses" which is a practice that goes back to the Middle Ages. However, one theory prevails: it would be linked to the passage of Napoleon I, who recruited soldiers for his campaigns in Italy. On their return, they would have adapted a system they had encountered in Italy: climbing vines on live trees on the other side of the Alps. This was a good way to increase production, and therefore income, since on a small piece of land (initially a simple garden), the yield increased tenfold. This original tradition of "en crosses" cultivation is a method of pruning in which the vines grow along the barked trunks of chestnut trees planted in the ground. If it remains anecdotal in the wine landscape (about a hundred crosses are still counted), this type of cultivation would present advantages linked to the distance from the ground: the vine is better protected from the dreaded spring frosts on the shores of Lake Geneva, and would be less sensitive to diseases or insects such as phylloxera.

Terroirs

Located on the hillsides and terraces overlooking Evian and Thonon les Bains, the vines benefit from a different terroir: the terraces have a rich, deep permeable soil and the hillsides have a mixture of stone gravel and soil brought here probably by glaciers. The climate has extremes but they are softened by the immediate vicinity of Lake Geneva. The exposure of the vineyard is South West with a breathtaking view of the entire Swiss coast.
