History and evolution of the vineyard

The presence of the vineyard is attested to since Roman times when this place was called "Mons Melioratus". It has had a double fame for centuries. Indeed, the first one is the success of Montmélian to have kept a citadel known as "impregnable" (attacked 4 times in 105 years) but which was finally conquered and razed by the armies of Louis XIV. The second is to have produced a quality wine that was renowned throughout its existence. An abbot of Hautecombe, Gandfried, praised the merits of this wine in 1180, he had the privilege of collecting a tax from the sales of the wine merchants for the maintenance of his walls. Unfortunately, the vineyard has been sacrificed over the years to the urbanization and development of the city. The AOC was created in 1973

Terroirs

Located in the foothills of the Bauges Massif, Montmélian is at the crossroads of the Maurienne and Tarentaise valleys, the Grésivaudan and the Cluse de Chambéry. Its vineyard benefits from a good exposure and an exceptional soil composed of marl and marly scree.
