History and evolution of the vineyard

Currently, the castle of Ripaille is surrounded by 22 hectares of vineyards which have a privileged situation thanks to the proximity of the lake. The culture of the vine is very old, probably of Gallo-Roman origin. In the Middle Ages, the domain belonged to the sovereign house of Savoy, but the vineyard and the wine were the business of monks, canons of Saint-Augustin at first, the Carthusian monks of Vallon installed by Saint-François de Sales then. It became national property during the Revolution and was sold several times. Following a donation, the municipality of Thonon les Bains manages the castle which has been home to the Ripaille Foundation since 1976 and the property belongs to the Necker family. The wine obtained the AOC in 1973.
