The reputation of Chignin goes back to the 11th century, as evidenced by the presence of the ruins of seven medieval towers. These vestiges let us imagine the importance of the fortified complex that existed in the past. Today, they are scattered throughout the vineyard. Already at that time the vineyard enjoyed a good reputation, besides it was already qualified as vineyard of "optimi vini" which means "best wine". The latter attracted the inhabitants of the Bauges (the Boujus) who flocked en masse at harvest time. But they could not buy the slopes which were well above their means. Today it represents the third largest geographical denomination of the entire vineyard and is still growing. The AOC was created in 1973.
At the foot of the Massif des Bauges, the geographical name Chignin benefits from exceptional conditions. A south to south-east exposure, protection from the north winds by the mountains, steep slopes, a soil made of limestone scree at the top and marl-limestone at the bottom, all these criteria allow the production of an emblematic Savoyard wine.
