History and evolution of the vineyard

Like its neighbors, Arbin and Montmélian, the geographical denomination St Jean de la Porte, is appreciated since the XIth century. In the 13th and 14th centuries, these wines had the privilege of being the beverage of the bishops and counts of Savoy in Chambéry as in Turin. From the revolution of 1789 until the middle of the century, the vineyard of St Jean de la Porte extended over the whole hillside, even in the steepest places but exposed to the south and sheltered from the wind. In the 18th century, the vineyards belonged to a few owners outside the commune, such as the Hospices de Chambéry. In 1807, the prefect VerBboeilh consecrated the primacy of St Jean de la Porte by declaring that "the upper part of this commune is covered by its best vineyards". Thirty years later, the same wine is still quoted in the high places of Chambéry as "the most exquisite of Savoy". 1973, the Mondeuse vintage of St Jean de la Porte is officialized. In 1988, thanks to the revival undertaken by the Cruet cellar, the St Jean de la Porte cru progressed in quantity. After several recognitions over the years, the size of the vineyard increases while keeping its notoriety (Source St Jean de la Porte.fr)

Terroirs

The commune of Saint Jean de la Porte is located in the middle of the Combe de Savoy on the right bank of the Isère, at the foot of the Massif des Bauges. It benefits from a privileged position on a balcony overlooking the valley, with remarkable views of the Grand-Arc, Hurtières, Lauzière, Sept-Laux and Belledonne massifs. The hillsides are suitable for a quality vineyard, while the very fertile plain is used for corn and cereal crops.
